  What is Xvid?

XviD is the name of a new open-source video codec, which just like DivX, is based on the new MPEG4 compression standard for video. It's currently being developed by people from all over the world.

This codec is capable of reducing an MPEG-2 video (the same format used for DVD) to ten percent of its original size. This means that a full-length, full-motion, full-screen, near DVD-quality feature film can fit onto a standard 700Mb CDr or fit up to six feature films on a standard 4.7Gb DVDr.
