First Impressions
The Skworth 3650 DVD player is based on the Mediatek MT1389DE chipset and first impressions suggest that it is very similar to other Mediatek based DivX players such as the Yamada DVX-6600 and Rimax Multiplayer. The MT1389DE has become a popular chipset and is now used in many DivX players. Players based on this chipset usually have good DivX and XviD compatibility but do suffer from poor DivX/XviD subtitle support.
Here are a few pictures of the setup options:
Using the Skyworth 3650
Using the Skyworth is basically the same as any other DVD player, place a retail DVD, VCD, SVCD or Audio CD into the tray, press 'CLOSE' and the disk will play automatically. The difference between the Skyworth and a standard DVD player can be seen when a data disk is inserted.
When a data disk (CDR or DVDR) which contains DivX files, XviD files, un-authored MPG video files, MP3 or JPG's is inserted, the Skyworth will display the following menu.

Now you can use the remote control to navigate around the disk, highlight the file you wish to play/view and press 'ENTER'
DivX/XviD Compatibility
DivX/XviD compatibility testing was performed with the use of the 'DivXTestCD v1.0' by bbdoc. The Skyworth was found to have good compatibility but it does experience audio/video synchronisation problems when playing DivX/XviD files with 'ogm' audio. This is a common problem with Mediatek based players.
Results and a comparison to other players can be found here.
Unfortunately the Skyworth does not support DivX/XviD subtitles but hopefully this may be fixed with a later release of firmware. When the Yamada DVX-6600 was first released it too was unable to play DivX/XviD subtitles. Please note that retail DVD subtitles are displayed without any problems.
It was also noticed that when a DivX/XviD file is first played, an 'On Screen Display' timer is displayed in the top left hand corner. To remove the 'On Screen Display' the OSD button on the remote control must be pressed twice. This may also be fixed with a later release of firmware.
Summary
Pros
- Good DivX/XviD Compatibility
- Cheap
Cons
- No DivX/XviD subtitle support
- OSD always displayed when a DivX/XivD file is played.
